The arrest of a man identified as Tom Wood aka Eli or Ely Wood who is alleged to be a member of a group of gypsies is accused of preying on elderly citizens along with others who have not made an appearance in court has a court date of August 18.
The group stand accused of selling services such as tree cutting or other home repair services throughout the county and during the time that one of the group would distract the homeowner another would enter the home. The same day the group tried to distract another homeowner for the same purpose and was unsuccessful in their attempt.
Woods and two others of the group were arrested at a Hotel in San Jose, Woods is the first to appear in court and has an August 5th pretrial conference and a jury trial will begin on August 18th. If convicted of the current charges of residential burglary, grand theft and petty theft this will result in a second strike for Wood who is currently on parole.
The woman who was robbed for $780. was distracted when she was told the men would trim her trees and were doing this as a service to the elderly.
Tom Wood is currently being held in custody in lieu of $250,000 bail until his trial that will be held in August.
